Here’s a few things we thought you might find useful to inform others about the strike and to use while you are striking.

If you have anything you’d like to share send it to us ucu@shu.ac.uk and we’ll put it up on here.

Click and download a PDF copy of one of our leaflets and send to family, friends, students, to help explain why we are on strike.  There are also a couple of our Hallam Strikes Back images you can use as a logo for your Twitter accounts, Facebook profile, etc.

Recruit a member

Here’s a printer friendly copy of our Join UCU Hallam leaflet to download to give to colleagues who are not in the union.  They are free to join at any point during the dispute.  Our numbers are growing and once action starts non-member colleagues will be asked to pick up for free more and more of the work that the increasing number of members will not be completing.  Refusal to do so could result in disciplinary action from management, as could refusing to cross a picket line, although in the latter instance if a non-member was disciplined for refusing to cross a picket line then we would allow the individual to become a member immediately.  They would be treat as a striking employee by the university and as such has a legal right to withdraw their labour at any point during an industrial dispute.

Put on your “Out of Office”

For your voicemail message:

I am a member of the University and College Union (UCU) and will be on strike from Monday November 25th – Wednesday December 4th inclusive.  Members of SHU UCU Branch are taking part in industrial action for both the local AWP Dispute and the national dispute around workloads, casualisation, equality and pay.

Please do not leave a message as I will not be responding to voicemails left during the strike period.  If you still require a response, then please call after December 4th.

Rest up, pause a moment to dream of “What if…”

If you’re located at the City campus you probably walk past it most days, located on the side of the Owen building and visible to all those entering the city from the train station, you will probably have done what many have done before and what Sir Andrew Motion’s poem entices you to do and paused on the hill for a moment of inspiration to read his words.

One of our talented members went one step further and made this.  Very inspirational!
