What's On?

There's a whole range of activities happening during Strike Back for anyone to get involved in staff, students, families, friends, all welcome!

Here’s a list of other things you can get involve with on the picket lines.

This week during the strike, as well as the Teach Outs we will be hosting a range of activities (further information below), from rallies, marches, speakers, samba bands, and even a toddler bloc for your young activists, both at Sheffield Hallam University and University of Sheffield.

New activities are being added all the time so do keep coming back to check or follow us on Twitter @ucuhallam.

Please come along to get involved!

If you have an idea for an activity or you’d like to volunteer to help and one of the ones in the list please do let us know.

Please note:  There will be photographers visiting pickets and at rallys and we will be putting pics up on social media.  It will be impossible for us to promise you won’t get papped and it going viral and we can’t control things in crowded areas, but if you’re at a picket line and you don’t want to snapped then do tell one of the official pickets who will try their best to keep you out of any shots.   However, if we post a pic of you on here or on Twitter that you’d like us to take down please contact us and we will do.   There may be journalists there too (we hope) who may stop you to give your reasons for being at the rally.  If you don’t want to interviewed please point them in the direction of an official picket.

Monday 25th November – First Day of Strike Back

We thought we’d kick the strike off on a positive, upbeat note.  And what could be more upbeat than music and dancing?

We have a fantastic group of samba dancers that have offered to get us all fired up for the day with a demonstration.

Bring your dancing shoes to this one!

Don’t forgot to see Jamie Grace’s Teach Out on Clare’s Law first, and no sneaking out before the end…there’ll be plenty of time to get there before the speakers start at 12.30.

Knit In

Professor Jane Hutton, a UCU-nominated, non-Executive board member of USS was dismissed after she raised concerns about the governance and general management of the pension fund.

As a show of support UCU branches across the country are contributing towards creating a solidarity blanket.   We need either 6 inch (15cm) or 12 inch (30cm) squares.  For colours think UCU + Disney’s Frozen.

If you can’t knit and would like to learn come along to Hallam Square, City Campus between 9am-11am.

If you have any finished squares to pass on please email us or bring them to one of the picket lines this week.

Social @ Red Deer Pub

Red Deer Pub, 18 Pitt Street, Sheffield. S1 4DD – 2pm-4pm

It’s been an emotional experience and we want to take this opportunity to get together for a few words of thanks for everyone’s hard work over the last few weeks.  We need to reflect on the events that have happened over the strike and make some plans for what comes next but we also need to raise a glass or two in solidarity.
