Message from UCU Hallam Committee
Tomorrow is the first of our 8 days of continuous strike action. It follows 3 years of negotiations with management at SHU that too often were characterised by absolute intransigence. Yes, management did make an offer when faced with the results of the first local statutory ballot for industrial action at SHU in memory, but that offer did not address the crushing increases in workloads that you have faced, year after year.
And so here we are, taking strike action to secure a meaningful work-life balance, but also joining dozens of other universities in taking action over pay, pay inequalities and casualisation. The fact that we are by far the largest post-92 institution to have achieved the ballot threshold in this second dispute says a great deal about how energised our membership is.
Management may still be betting on these strikes being poorly supported. We know that’s is a bet they will not win. Scores of new members have joined Sheffield Hallam branch in the past 10 days and hundreds of you have been in touch to ask questions relating to the strike or to volunteer for picketing duty. We know this will be the best supported strike at SHU in over a decade.
Our best hope for meaningful resolutions to the two disputes is to show management how strongly supported they are. I hope as many of you as are able will join us on the picket lines, speaking to students and staff, building solidarity and getting our message out to the wider public.
Together we are stronger; together we can win!
