Help us settle our dispute and end the strikes!  

Why are we taking action?  This local* dispute is about the impact of ongoing cuts on staff and student support!

Issues include:

• Planned budget cuts: The university leadership intends to continue cutting the budget, with a further £31 million reduction planned for 2025–26. These cuts carry the risk of more job losses—something the leadership has refused to rule out.
• Impact on student experience: Around 1000 teaching and professional service support staff have already been lost due to previous cuts, which has significantly affected the quality of education and support available to students.
• Increased pressure on remaining staff: Those still working are facing heavier workloads, leading to stress-related illness and less time to support students.  This includes the removal of the academic adviser role for some students.

What you can do:

Your voice matters! Please complete the attached letter to our Vice Chancellor, Liz Mossop, adding your name and course. By sending this letter you are exercising your right as a student of Sheffield Hallam University to seek answers to questions about issues that affect you. Your voice has power to influence the VC’s next steps.

Dear Professor Liz Mossop,

I am a student at Sheffield Hallam University, and I’m writing to express my deep concern about the ongoing budget cuts, attack on staff pensions, working conditions and their impact on the student experience and staff morale.

Any further job losses will only worsen working conditions for staff; conditions that already affect the quality of teaching and support we receive. These cuts directly undermine my learning experience.

As a senior leader, you have the power to prevent further disruption to students. I urge you to begin constructive negotiations with the union as soon as possible, so that a resolution can be reached to end strike action.

I also want to inform you that I will be encouraging Hallam Students’ Union to demand compensation for students affected by lost teaching time due to industrial action, in line with guidance from the Office for Students.

Staff involved in this dispute have consistently shown concern for their students, and I support their efforts to resist further damaging cuts to our university.
